NISCN CONFERS LAGOS STATE SAFETY COMMISSION DG, LANRE MOJOLA WITH SENIOR SAFETY ADVOCATE AWARD

The National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCN) has conferred its prestigious Senior Safety Advocate (SSA) title on the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, in recognition of his contributions to occupational health, safety and environmental standards in Nigeria.
In a formal notification addressed to Mojola, the National Executive Council and entire membership of the NISCN said the honour was in recognition of his “visionary leadership, outstanding dedication and impactful contributions” to the advancement of Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) standards in Lagos State and across Nigeria.
According to the council, Mojola’s leadership of the Lagos State Safety Commission has helped strengthen proactive safety regulation, advocacy for safety culture and institutional excellence.
The council further noted that the recognition made Mojola the first recipient of the Senior Safety Advocate title, adding that he is now entitled to use the designation “SSA” before his name.
The award comes against the backdrop of several safety initiatives implemented by the Lagos State Safety Commission under Mojola’s leadership, covering occupational safety, emergency preparedness, public safety and risk management.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mojola led the commission’s safety assessment and auditing efforts as businesses, schools, religious institutions and hospitality establishments prepared for reopening. The commission introduced safety protocols and a registration process for establishments seeking approval to reopen safely.
Under his leadership, the commission also institutionalised the 4Es safety framework — Evaluation, Education, Engagement and Enforcement — as an approach to identifying risks, educating stakeholders, engaging communities and enforcing safety regulations across formal and informal sectors.
The commission has also intensified safety interventions in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sector through training and monitoring of gas retailers, cylinder handlers and plant operators, with emphasis on preventing gas explosions and fire incidents.
In the education sector, the commission has promoted school safety programmes involving safety awareness, emergency preparedness, fire drills and risk assessments, while safety sensitisation has also been extended to artisans and workers in informal sectors, including market operators, mechanics, transport workers and construction workers.
Mojola’s administration has equally promoted professional safety training through programmes designed to improve workplace safety knowledge among operational personnel, managers and executives.
The commission has continued to conduct safety inspections and risk assessments in high-risk facilities, including construction sites, industrial facilities, event venues and other commercial establishments, with sanctions imposed on establishments found to be non-compliant with safety requirements.
Its interventions have also extended to food establishments and public events, where safety, hygiene, emergency preparedness and crowd-management measures are monitored.
During festive periods, the commission has collaborated with relevant emergency and fire authorities to conduct safety campaigns in major commercial centres, while community-level emergency preparedness has been strengthened through initiatives involving CPR, first aid and basic emergency-response training.
The conferment of the Senior Safety Advocate (SSA) title places further recognition on Mojola’s role in promoting safety advocacy and regulatory compliance through the Lagos State Safety Commission.
