EDO GOVT FIXES LOCAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS FOR 2026

The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has fixed local government elections in the state.
According to the Chairman of the Commission, Hon.
Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, the election will hold on the Saturday 11th July, 2026.
Hon. Aifuobhokhan stated this in a press briefing on
Wednesday in Benin City, the Edo State Capital.
The Commission’s Chairman stated that the conduct of
the election was in pursuant to Section 28 (1) of the Electoral Act 2022, Edo
State Local Government Electoral Law 2012, and the Edo State Independent
Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) Establishment Act (as amended) 2022.
Hon. Aifuobhokhan added that the Commission will meet
with the various political parties in November 2025, to discuss the election
guidelines, while conduct of the primaries, including resolution of any arising
disputes will hold on Monday 10th November, 2025.

“Election into the offices of the Chairmen and Councillors
for the 18 Local Government Councils of the state shall be held on Saturday
11th July, 2026. All the registered political parties are required to collect
nomination forms on behalf of their candidates at the Edo State Independent
Electoral Commission headquarters, Benin City," Hon. Aifuobhokhan said.
Other scheduled activities for the Council elections
include collection of Forms AA1, and M slated for 8th to 22nd December, 2025,
while publication of personal particulars of candidates of political parties
comes up on Monday 12th January, 2026.
Hon. Aifuobhokhan assured that the conduct of the
election shall reflect the collective wish of the people of Edo State, and will
be free, fair and credible.
“This election will be conducted free, fair, credible, and acceptable to everyone in the state,” the Commission’s Chairman reassured.
